healthy artists movie poster exhibition

i recently created this movie poster for an exhibition put on by pittsburgh based non-profit organization, healthy artists. they're responsible for bringing awareness to the public regarding the lack of affordable health care that exists for the majority of americans, especially younger 'artists' who are not covered because of their independent venture. i was contacted by the founder, julie sokolow to participate in the show with only a few days before the judging. there were twenty other artists who created original pieces for this show based on the short documentary films that julie and her other partners at healthy artists put together. i was pretty impressed by the other contributions and am glad to have been included in a group of talented artists.

anyhow, here's what i came up with.

i really wanted to come up with something conceptual, but ended up taking certain instruments/tools from some the short documentary videos and building a composition around that. the element that i hope some people discovered is the winged shoes and stethoscope emulating the health care symbol. i must credit the wonderful, reba baggett for her wonderful handwriting. i steal her letters from notes and postcards she sends me and will continue to do so until she sends me a cease and desist notice. also, thank you to my mother kay d'incau for joting down 'a documentary series' on a post-it note for me.

forbidden planet poster

just finished up my contribution to the silver screen society for the movie of the month, forbidden planet. trevor basset and brandon schaefer are graphic designers who founded the project in which they select a different group of illustrators and designers every month who want to participate and interpret the movie with original poster art. here is mine. by the way, this movie is amazing just like it says on the dvd cover, i should have added that to mine. i would recommend checking it on out though; it's a sci-fi movie from 1957 featuring the stellar leslie nelson.
here's how it started to progress

and then, bam!

rain barrel & the streets.

these past few months, i've been dabbling in some other things. here are a few of the jazz musicians that i chose to draw for the rain barrels on parade project that pittsburgh's storm works and nine mile watershed association set up through funding by american eagle outfitters. i scanned my drawings and printed them out on acetate in which i then painted on the backs of them with acrylics using mostly sponges to have a textural look. there's some gold leaf in there as well. here are the print outs prior to painting.

here is somewhat the final product of the rain barrel. it is currently on display at the us steel building lobby in downtown pittsburgh. it will be up for auction sometime in september.

on another side note, i played some tunes with a few friends the other week. girl can sing.

here we go magic...

here's a poster i printed right before last night's show, which was quite enjoyable; especially due to the sleep deprivation and sense of delirium that i felt. here are a few images of the experience. not my harley or my press.

geno.

sort of last minute thing thrown together. had an idea along these lines for a while now, but only decided today to try it. thanks to ben, who will never see this for staying after work to print these for me. only ran off about eight of shirts. this is evgani malkin, by the way. he's one of them superstar athletes that happens to play on my pittsburgh penguins hockey team, and good thing. the likeness could probably be pushed more, but aye.

velociprint poster show -tucson arizona 11/12 & 11/14

this here is a print i did for a bike/art/poster exhibition out in tucson, arizona. found this show after my bad luck attempt at getting into the artcrank las vegas show. this literally came down to the last minute, but i think i'm rather happy with it, especially considering that. limited run of 30 and 9 AP's on 9.5" x 12.5" speckle toned stock (french's).

leave em outside your door, i'm your trash man.

my drawings are turning into rubbish. this was suppose to be used for the upcoming cover of bicycle times, but apparently it failed to meet expectations. whoops.

playing with shapes.

somehow, i managed to get ahead of my schedule at work and decided to revisit my linebacker sketch of the dearly beloved annie clark (st. vincent). this is one of my first attempts at actually applying color in illustrator, i usually do this kind of vector art in corel draw, but i think this turned out somewhat interesting.

bicycle times 011 spots.

here are two spot illustrations i did for the 011 edition of bicycle times magazine. my pictures were suppose to accompany a contributor's letter talking about how a liberal audience can discuss and join together with more conservative folk on the positive qualities that bicycling offers us as americans. i ended up scraping my original drawings for these two and busted theses out the night before and i am much happier with how they turned out.

pittsburgh city paper spot.

miss lisa cunningham of the city paper was nice enough to assign me a near half page spot piece on the gradual demise of the port authority transit system. it only works when you look at it from this angle.

cycle cover.

a friend of mine by the name of stephen haynes, was just recently hired as the art director for bicycle times magazine, an international magazine for the cycling enthusiast. i'm very appreciative that he asked me to do the cover for his first issue there, and this is about how it turned out. thanks, again to stephen and all the nice folk who took a moment to tell me that they liked it.

screen printed poster that i made for a band i make music with.

this is a small press my friend, stephen has setup in his home studio. he basically did all of the work and supplied the poster with its ink and foundation.

this was a lot of fun to watch, even though it's only two screens. i'm looking forward to doing more in the future and learning about the medium and methods further. printed off a run of fifteen and then hung about nine or so up in a few spots downtown. my band's name is catfish edwards & the hit machines.

bicycle times finish?

here's where i ended up. not sure yet if they want any revision on it.

bicycle times cover progress.

i've been fortunate enough to be creating a cover for pittsburgh based magazine bicycle times. a good friend of mine that i used to work with is now the art director of the magazine and i have been working with him to get this where they need it to be. he basically left the theme up to me and i'm not quite sure why i decided to go in this direction, but it makes sense to me i guess. i like riding and it's my first cover gig, so i'm just running with that. i believe this is distributed out and about most of the world, so that's interesting. here's where i'm at thus far, i wouldn't doubt some colors being adjusted , but i'll probably keep mostly with what i have going on. the second version with the jagged background lines was nixed, which was a bummer. until then.

tee.

printed off a few shirts of a design that i threw together some time ago. thought that these would be perfect for sassy pre-teens, just like the figure modeling this one here (my sister). i'm thinking of setting up an online shop of sorts to sell these and some other things, but i still have about ten or so of these left, mostly girls cuts.
